Years after the Madison Jail, of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Jail system was abandoned for demolition, a solitary basketball remains suspended above the caged-in ball court of the 5th floor, a high security section.
The ball has become whitened by the sun, after years of daily exposure under the Phoenix, AZ sun in Maricopa County.
The high security yard is fenced in, covered with steel wire and barbed wire. The ball was caught on top of the detention officer ‘run’ seen here on the left side of the image.
Somehow, this is one of the remaining artifacts of incarceration, which makes me feel the lingering humanity of this otherwise stark and cold building, in it’s final months before demolition.
