Sometimes an inmates’ motivation for participating in my Jail Project is obvious and understandable. Often, it’s an expression of bravado, a break in the jail routine, or showing off for the other inmates.
This inmate however, seem to have a profound look of resignation, and I remember at the time I didn’t really understand why he wanted the portrait taken. I asked him what had happened to his eye, but all he said was that he got hit.
Yet, here he is smiling to someone off-camera, while posing with his Model Release form.
This would often happen, where an inmate would be relatively relaxed and playful at the initial Model Release photograph, and then strike an emotionally different pose for his or her portrait.
